Cleaning your Chesterfield sofa or suite

Leather upholstery and furniture in your home or office provides comfort and beauty and evokes a sense of prestige. With a reputation for great durability and a long life, your chesterfield leather furniture can be a part of your home furnishings for a lifetime. With such a luxury item that will be around for so long it is essential to keep on top of the general maintenance and care of your chesterfield sofa or suite to ensure it keeps it colour and charm for years to come.

Leather is a type of material that is easily maintained. Caring for your furniture is easily overlooked, but in order to hold the value of your leather, you should follow a few simple tasks in order to keep your leather looking, feeling, and even smelling new. You should also know of the different styles of leather finishes before you purchase your leather furniture.

Of course your leather chesterfield sofa, Wing Chair or club chair will over time and age, grow its own patina which is entirely normal and one of the best characteristics of a high quality leather settee. This may manifest in areas such as colour variance on high traffic surfaces of the chair or sofa, creases, and changes in suppleness of the surface leather and while character worn in over time can be beautiful this ageing process can be aided towards true character rather than and old worn and dirty look.

Chesterfield leather care tips.

  • Please do not place next to permanent heat sources such as radiators as this will dry out the leather prematurely which over time, can result in uneven wear of your sofa or chair.
  • Avoid using harsh or abrasive chemicals on your furniture as these can seriously damage the finish of the leather and in some cases, permanently stain the item.
  • Do not leave wet denim on aniline leathers as the colour's may well run off.
  • Regularly dust your wing chair, club chair or chesterfield sofas as this will minimize the ingress of grime into the grain of the leather.
  • Treat the leather with an approved leather cleaning solution every 2 to 3 months (Please call the number at the top of this website for details).
  • The minimum we recommend you clean your leather is at least three times a year. This will keep your chesterfield in its best condition.
  • All leather types can react differently to cleaning, so keep a close eye out to spot any fades or colour changes on your chesterfield leather.
  • Wet wipes can be damaging to your Chesterfield furniture – leather wipes are made for the job or you can even simply use a damp cloth instead.
  • Most cleaning products for leather come in concentrate form – always dilute the mixture before you apply it as the concentrated liquid can cause damage.
  • When cleaning just two or three wipes over each surface area will do the job. Rubbing hard and consistently on the same spot will do more harm than good.
  • To make sure the colour isn’t bleeding out of the leather on your chesterfield keep a close eye on the colour of your cloth.

As well as a good thorough clean three times a year or more you can keep on top of the condition of your chesterfield on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Here are a few tips on achieving this.

Daily

  • Dust down with a lint free cloth

Weekly

  • Wash gently with warm water and a clean lint free cloth (except aniline leathers)
  • Use a soft brush to revive the finish on the leather.

Monthly. (At very least no less than three times a year.)

  • Treat with a recommended leather clean and feed product to protect the properties of the leather and to prevent drying and cracking of the surface.

Leather can dry out quickly especially in times of low humidity like in a hot spell during summer. Moisturising products specially designed for leather are highly recommended as leather is a skin after all.  Your chesterfield will thank you for it. Leather Protection Cream is a water based leather cream used to condition, protect, nourish and re-instate the aroma into old and new leather items.

Another way to avoid heat and sun damage is to position your leather sofa so that, where possible, it is out of reach of direct sunlight and away from other sources of heat, such as a fire or radiator. Both sunlight and direct heat can cause the leather color to fade. If the only place to put your sofa is near the window, installing blinds in the window can offer protection to a leather sofa and reduce fading.

Over time as your chesterfield is used more you will find skin oils, perspiration & grease will slowly start to build up and then attack the leather causing the leather to discolour, crack and peel. This damage is most obvious where a people rest their hands appearing as a dull, dark mark and eventually cracking.

Leather protection Creams.

Leather Protection Creams provide advanced barrier protection technology to help repel all oil & water based staining from leather helping to prevent the aforementioned problems from occurring.

The barrier applied to the leather will also hold general dirt & soiling on the surface making the leather much easier to clean and care for, with the added bonus of also stopping pen marks, jean dye transfer and such from penetrating the leathers coating. This allows such staining to be cleaned much more easily than if your chesterfield is left to age without proper care.
